Fano – Family label business invests in Mark Andy P5 press

POLAND • In order to expand its product range and look for new markets using filmic substrates, particularly shrink sleeves and sachets, the Warsaw based label print shop Fano invested in a Mark Andy Performance P5 press. Significantly, this has allowed the company to extend its product portfolio beyond self-adhesive labels. The choice of press is also significant because the co-owner of Fano, Boleslaw Jasinowicz, is the influential vice chairman of the Polish label association (SPPES), a non-profit organisation founded in 1997 to assist the country’s label printers to improve their technical skills and broaden their market knowledge.

When Janusz Jasinowicz established Fano in 1985 to produce a range of printed products on a single colour offset press, he could scarcely have imagined how his Warsaw based company would grow into a high-tech converting house capable of meeting and matching the best narrow web flexo quality that Europe can offer. The move into flexo came in 1994, and over the following 20 years a selection of Nilpeter and Mark Andy presses were installed to produce predominantly paper-based labels for the food and household products markets. By 2012, the company management, which by then included Janusz’s son Boleslaw, decided it needed to expand its product range and look for new markets using filmic substrates.


The new P5, which has a 430 mm (17”) web width, is a ten-colour UV-flexo line, fitted with two screen stations, delam/relam, cold foil, and the QCDC (Quick Change Die Cut) system, which allows for die replacement through the side-frame. The press also has Mark Andy’s Compact Parallel Web Translator, which allows production of Peal & Read labels. To enable it to handle thin films, the servo driven P5 is fitted with chill drums, which gives it 15-micron substrate capability. Typical run lengths on the P5 span the 10,000-piece job up to 200,000 linear metres of material for products like ice cream and mayonnaise, mostly run-off at speeds from 80-120 m/min (262-394 fpm).

With quality at a premium in the company, Fano is proud of its HD-Flexo certification and ISO 9001:2008 accreditation. Working typically with 220-240-lpi screening, they are self-sufficient from studio through to delivery. The company, which had hitherto served only the domestic Polish market, has now expanded its sales into Germany and Scandinavia. With the current 1600 sqm production facility bursting at the seams, plans are well ahead for move to a new 4000 sqm site that will allow a more efficient workflow, offer space for more production equipment, and increase staff numbers beyond the current 60.

Fano is a fine example of how ongoing investment in the Polish label market is bringing high quality print at competitive prices to the mature but discerning markets of the EU. Use of the latest technology and the best inks, substrates, and other consumables by well-trained people is bringing a whole new dynamic to Western Europe, and Fano has plans to capitalise on this by growing its export business.
