Since the launch of the JDF-idea, back in 1999, MIS has filled the roll of the central dispatch system for production information. And a few MIS systems really turned themselves into intelligent business automation systems that make choices to optimize production. An inspiring collaboration

During the BPIF event, Cerm invited four partners to explain how the integration brings out the best of every system. Esko connects the administrative MIS pre-production to the technical pre-production via its Automation Engine (AE) workflow automation system, whereas Cerm and Esko prepare the electronic job tickets for the production devices. The operator on the HP Indigo digital press only needs to change paper and ink and can start production immediately.
The AB Graphic (ABG) slitter and laser die-cutter are triggered by a barcode, printed by that digital press in the lead-out-area after the “good production” metres. The barcode directs the ABG computer to the technical information for the automated setup. The AVT Helios 100% automatic inspection system even does not need an operator anymore. The inspection data is prepared before production and will be used for verification, directed by another barcode, printed on every individual print-frame.
Geert Van Damme, Managing Director of Cerm, remembers that the first steps in integration between Cerm and ESKO started back in 2005. It took years of re-engineering from both sides to come to the today’s simple looking result. He dared to compare with the iPhone: simple for the user but high-tech “under the hood”. One-up approval cycle
The first big difference between the Cerm MIS, the Esko AE and their respective competitors is the existence of a “products” module that allows the printer to manage the approval cycle independently from the order-entry. Whether the customer will or will not order all variants within a series of products, all of them can be “approved” even before the first order arrives. On the other hand, all orders can already be prepared for production, even when the approval is not in yet.
Two elements that lengthen the printers average lead-time within classic print MIS and prepress workflows. The integration samples that were shown during the seminar all started from the web collaboration tools that both Cerm and Esko offer to their customers’ customers: the brand owners.
