Herma – New special film slitting machine

“The cutting edges are very precise and clean”, confirms Herma employee Roman Aberle. The new slitting machine is expected to propel Herma’s growth in the film segment.

GERMANY • The self-adhesive materials specialist has invested in a new, state-of-the-art slitting machine at its headquarters in Filderstadt near Stuttgart. It is designed for demanding label stock and large roll diameters and the investment amounted to approximately EUR 1.5 million.

Herma made the decision for another slitting machine with special regard to optimal results in processing demanding film-based self-adhesive materials. Clear-on-clear label stock and metalized films, for instance, which are currently in high demand but are rather fragile, require constant winding tension for optimal winding quality as well as extremely precise, clean cutting edges. The new film slitting machine sets benchmarks in this regard, enabling even rolls with a 1,250 mm (49.2”) diameter at a constant quality. In many other slitting machines, the winding quality decreases with increasing running lengths or with increasing roll diameters.

The increasing demand for film-based label stock has several reasons: “Thanks to our multi-layer technology, printers can produce labels from film-based label stock much more easily”, says Managing Director Dr Thomas Baumgärtner. “Our multi-layer materials cause less adhesive bleeding, for instance. Likewise, the level of contamination of the slitting dies is significantly reduced.”
