Soma Engineering: Winner of iF Design Award
USA Printing and converting equipment manufacturer Soma Engineering has been honoured in the 2014 iF Awards, Product Design Category. The company was among 1220 winners honoured and received the Award for its new Optima flexographic printing press winning in the sub-category of industrial design.
The iF Product Design Award is one of the most prestigious of its kind in Germany with an assessment criterion that comprises differential aspects including degree of innovation, choice of manufacturing materials used and functionality. An individual panel of 49 experts in design evaluated 3,249 product entries in 17 different categories culminating in the prestigious iF Awards ceremony at BMW World, Munich in February. Over 2000 attendees from 55 countries were represented and included participants from all disciplines including design, business, commerce, media and politics. Soma CEO, Ladislav Verner accepted the Award and Certificate from iF CEO, Ralph Wiegman in the company of Messrs. Premysl Kokes and David Rosinai, the two designers responsible for the Optima concept.
The ergonomic design of the Optima printing press focuses on increased print efficiency and optimised operator comfort. The press enables the production of cost-effective short run jobs with low running costs. Automated job settings permit production that resonates with environmental requirements while saving on substrate and consumables waste. The design and configuration of the machine was developed over some time with a large element of the specification driven by Soma customers and the need to supply a highly complex range of printing and packaging configurations to end users. Dimensions and web path limitations have been reduced by moving away from the traditional central impression press concept and incorporating the material unwind and rewind systems within the machine itself. This design concept permits more flexibility in printing and converting options.
Located in Lanskroun, Czech Republic, Soma Engineering designs and manufactures printing and converting machines for a wide variety of industries. Its portfolio encompasses CI flexographic presses, slitter/rewinders, laminators, mounter-proofers, sheeters, die cutters and special purpose machines.
